Mamma Moved Mountains

With books as my ladder, my world moved up high

One day on the grass,

I lay bored on my own.

Nothing to do.

I was just stuck at home.

Mamma said kindly

“Be joyful and play.”

For she had moved mountains,

To make life this way.

She never gave in,

To impossible tasks.

My mum was a hero,

With no cape or a mask.

I think of my Mamma,

In all that I do.

When something seems big,

It is possible too.

I looked at the moon,

Big and round in the sky.

I wanted to go there,

But I couldn’t fly.

But mamma moved mountains,

So at least I could try.

And with books as my ladder,

My world moved up high.

The forest I’d heard of,

But I’d never known.

I dreamt of regrowing,

But not on my own.

But mamma moved mountains,

herself, all alone.

So one became thousands,

And look how they’ve grown.

A stranger was crying,

I didn’t know why.

And I thought to myself,

Well, what help am I?

But mamma moved mountains,

I had nothing to fear.

And I changed someone’s life,

With a smile and an ear.

A chance meeting with someone with a fascinating family history inspired me to write this poem. But is was really easy for me to write it because I am very fortunate to have been raised by a fearlessly strong lady who I'm immensely proud to call my Mum. I genuinely believed she could have run the country when I was little. To be honest, I think she could still whip the UK Government into shape today. Not only is my Mum bold and brave, she is endlessly kind. With a creative mind, I had loads of nightmares as a child. My mum never failed to sit with me in the night, no matter how exhausted she was.

My mum carved out a brand new career in her fifties (as did my Dad, for that matter). When social pressures suggest you should have it all figured out before you're 30, well my Mum reminds me that that is bollocks because she bravely started at the bottom and worked her way up. She absolutely nailed it and became a leader in her industry in less than a decade. I couldn't have asked for a better female role model growing up. I think it's an exciting time for women at the moment, and so many outdated beliefs are changing. I'm so grateful for having grown up being influenced by such a wonderful woman.

Thank you, Mamma xxx
